Biography of Dr. William F. Clark
Dr. William Clark received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Ursinus College in 1971, later completing a Masters in Education in Language Arts from Temple University in 1973. Between 1971 and 1979 he taught English and German in the Pennsylvania public school system.

In 1979, Dr. Clark resigned as a public school teacher and enrolled in the Respiratory Therapy Program at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. In 1982 he graduated at the top of his class, received Hahnemann's Distinguished Service Award. That same year he was named in Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Dr. Clark initially worked in the Pulmonary Function Laboratory at Hahnemann University Hospital, then became a supervisor at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital in Darby, Pennsylvania. At the same time, he served as a clinical instructor for Gwynedd Mercy College Respiratory Therapy Program. In 1985, Dr. Clark became critical care coordinator and day supervisor of the Respiratory Care Department of Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, also providing clinical instruction for the Respiratory Care Program at Harrisburg Area Community College. At Holy Spirit Hospital, Dr. Clark was instrumental in starting a neonatal intensive care unit.

In 1987, Dr. Clark became Director of Respiratory Care at Bayonne Hospital in Bayonne, New Jersey. During his tenure at Bayonne Hospital, Dr. Clark collaborated with the American Lung Association of Central New Jersey to start several community-based health education projects, receiving that Association's Professional Service Award in 1991. After coming to New Jersey, Dr. Clark also was appointed or elected to several key leadership roles in the New Jersey Society for Respiratory Care, including Director, Vice President, President and Delegate. The Society honored Dr. Clark for his contributions with its President's Award (1988) and the Corning Medical Achievement Award (1991).

In 1992, Dr. Clark joined the faculty at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey - School of Health Related Professions as an Assistant Professor and Director of the Respiratory Care Programs. Dr. Clark was elected to two consecutive two year terms as Faculty President of the SHRP faculty and has served many years on the SHRP Executive Council. He has served on and chaired several school and University committees such as Faculty Affairs Committee, Committee on Appointments and Promotions, Committee on Committees, and the University Strategic Planning Committee. In 1998, he was promoted to Associate Professor.

Remaining very active with the New Jersey Society, Dr. Clark was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Association for Respiratory Care in 1998, and received the New Jersey Society for Respiratory Care A. Gerald Shapiro Award the same year. In 1999, Dr. Clark completed his PhD in the College of Education and Human Service at Seton Hall University and was again recognized by the New Jersey Society for Respiratory Care with the President’s Award. In 2000, the American Lung Association of New Jersey and the New Jersey Thoracic Society honored Dr. Clark as the first recipient of the ALANJ Award in recognition of outstanding service and dedication to excellence in the profession of Respiratory Care. That same year the Foundation of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey also honored Dr. Clark with the Excellence in Teaching Award for the Academic Year 1999-2000 Most recently, in 2001, Dr. Clark was inducted into the Master Educator’s Guild as a Master Educator for the University of Medicine and Dentistry.

Dr. Clark has made numerous presentations throughout the United States and has contributed several chapters to the Delmar text Respiratory Care in Alternative Sites. He is currently an editor and a writer of several chapters for Foundations in Respiratory Care, a general textbook on respiratory care. Dr. Clark served as both the Vice President and President of the Lung Association of Northern New Jersey Board of Directors, chaired the Pediatric Asthma Coalition of New Jersey, and served as a judge on the University Award for Process Improvement and Innovation. Dr. Clark is now the Respiratory Care Program Manager at Hillsborough Community College.
