Description:

This five-day course was designed for anyone who needs to create e-Learning applications using ToolBook II Instructor. The course focuses on developing using the ToolBook II Instructor interface and understanding the productivity tools included with Instructor, such as the Animation Editor, the Catalog objects, OpenScript, and the Actions Editor. In this course, you will gain a deep understanding of how ToolBook II Instructor works. After you take the course, you will be able to develop sophisticated, easy-to-use e-Learning applications that get results!

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

1. Use ToolBook Catalog objects to save you hours of development time.
2. Create dynamic animations and add multimedia content that enhances student learning.
3. Develop an e-Learning application for Web deployment.
4. Use OpenScript and the ToolBook Actions Editor to customize your e-Learning application.
5. Build a glossary for the application.
6. Add interactivity to your e-Learning application by using ToolBook question objects.

Course Outline

The course consists of the following sections:

Introducing Toolbook concepts, including adding and deleting objects using the Catalog and the tool palette, modifying object properties, creating and modifying group objects, using Author and Reader levels, and adding and modifying pages and backgrounds.

Creating books using Templates, the Quick Specialist, the Full Specialist, and the Lesson Design Specialist.

Working with text in fields and recordfields, importing text, spell-checking text, and changing text properties; referencing HTML files on Web servers; adding PowerPoint presentations to your e-Learning applications.

Exploring navigation options, including hyperlinks, the automatic menu object, and the popup index object.

Publishing your lesson to the Web and viewing the lesson in a Web browser.

Adding a hotspots graphic object; using different types of links with the hotspots graphic objects; creating backgrounds with different page sizes.

Creating a new book style for use as a ToolBook Template; setting book, viewer, background and page properties; learning how to find lost objects.

Adding graphics using the reusable graphic object, Web graphic object, paint object, and picture object; using resources in Instructor; setting the chromakey property of graphics.

Adding animations to lessons using action triggers, the Actions Editor and OpenScript; creating path and cel animations using the Animation Editor.

Using sound, video, and streaming media to your e-Learning application; playing media with the Actions Editor and OpenScript; adding subtitles to streaming media with the Actions Editor; editing timing options of clips.

Expanding options for navigation using OpenScript and the Actions Editor; working with the Command window; adding a custom object to the Catalog.

Using a glossary; adding new terms to a glossary; linking the glossary book to your e-Learning application.

Adding question objects to add interactivity to your lesson, including true/false, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, match item, definable arrange, definable drop and slider question objects.


Examining feedback and scoring options for question objects, including immediate and delayed feedback; exploring text, media and navigation feedback; responding to incorrect answers; adding a timer. P

reparing an application for deployment and generating CD-ROM or diskettes with the Auto-Packager to distribute your e-Learning application.

Understanding the options for tracking student progress over a local area network and over the Web.

Create a software simulation for Web deployment in an optional lesson.


Class Length

Corporate: 5 days 40 hours (one week or combination of five days over two weekss, five one day sessions, or 10 ½ day sessions)

HCC Strudent: 3 hours/week 15 weeks or self study for up to 15 weeks


Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of Windows, including minimizing and maximizing windows; using the Run Command to launch programs; moving between Windows sessions using task switching and the Taskbar; and using the Windows Explorer to copy and move files, create subdirectories, navigate through the file structure, and launch programs.

Advanced ToolBook II Training

Students completing the 5 day training or CGS 1871 course, may contract for additional training with the 3 Day Corporate Actions Editor Workshop or take HCC's CGS 2874 at the Brandon campus. Corporate Cost $1000 for one person $1500 for two, $2000-2500 for 3-5 and $3000 for 6 or more. HCC's CGS 2874 is a 3 credit course costing the same as CGS 1871 above. Additional manuals must be purchased at ~$75 each. The CGS 2874 course also requires a second manual on OpenScript language at ~$75.


* Student version of ToolBook cost $99 through HCC's ATC. This version has all the functions of ToolBook except it does not allow the user to publish runtime versions of the student's work to disks, cd or the Internet. A full developer's license is required to publish projects, which may be purchased for ~$875-900 through HCC's ATC while being a student at HCC ATC. (Retail price $2599, Street price ~$2200-$2400)
