Ceramics has been a serious hobby of mine
since I was in graduate school. I used to try a little sculpture and
hand-building when I was younger, but some years ago I tried the potter's wheel for
the first time and I absolutely fell in love with it.
I now have a small studio at my house, with a
potter's wheel, slab-roller, extruder and kiln.
I mostly make functional pieces of
dinnerware, like cups, bowls, plates and so forth. Here are some of my pieces:
Some cups and spoon rests drying in my
studio.
Here are some pieces with a leaf-shape motif;
these are made by pressing a leaf into the clay body, covering it with
colored-slip, and then removing the leaf. See more about this masking process, if you are
interested.
These pieces are still wet in the photo shown
here; they still have to be trimmed up, fired and glazed.
Some bowls, in the process, drying before the next
stage..

trimmed and decorated….

Here are some plates with geometric designs, that I'm currently working on:

The
spiral motif is one I use all the time, simple and elegant:

My daughter Emma is also a budding potter and
sculptor. Here are some of her work:
Here are some of Emma's finished pieces….
This is an adorable little village Emma made
from some clay slabs, and decorated with underglazes:
