Index_3 DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM

The Dental Hygiene Program leads to an Associate in Science Degree. This program prepares students with both the clinical skills and classroom knowledge to successfully pass the National Dental Hygiene Board and the State Of Florida Dental Hygiene Board examinations. Both of these are required for licensure in the state of Florida.

A Dental Hygienist is a vital member of the dental team. They provide non-surgical periodontal therapy that includes scaling and root planning, adult and child prophylaxis, placement of dental sealants, exposure and processing radiographs, and individualized patient education. The Dental Hygienist must maintain the license by completing 24 continuing education credits every two years, as well as maintenance of their CPR certification.

The dental hygiene curriculum includes five consecutive semesters of courses and requires a time commitment of 35-40 hours weekly. Students will also complete their certification in expanded duties that are permitted by Florida Statute Title XXXII for dental auxiliaries.

Licensed Dental Hygienists also have the opportunity to join the American Dental Hygienists' Association. As a member of the association the dental hygienist can continue to grow as a professional.

The program is offered at the Dale Mabry Campus only.
